Health Prevention Campaign in Fortaleza and Chicago

​​Project Summary:

In this GLE, students were charged with creating a health prevention campaign for one of the public health issues, either diabetes or mental health for their respective cities (Fortaleza and Chicago). Students were assigned to bicultural teams of 4-6 students for this project. Students were asked to develop a presentation about the health care issue and a related prevention campaign. They were asked to discuss topics like Healthcare system resources in their city and come up with a prevention campaign for their respective cities and chosen health issue. Students also recorded and posted short introduction videos on Padlet about themselves and their favorite places and activities in their cities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students learned how healthcare systems in Brazil and the United States are similar and how they are different.
  • Students learned about the social determinants of chronic diseases: diabetes and mental health within the specific cities of Chicago and Fortaleza.
  • Students gained cross-cultural competence through communication with students from the partner school.
